The choreographer Riku Immonen created his version of H.C. Andersen's classic tale of the Ugly Duckling for the four dancers and two musicians of the Folk Dance Theatre. The show deals with the themes of difference, individuality and the importance of one's own personality in different communities. The Ugly Duckling is aimed at children between the ages of six and twelve, and it was performed 15 times in the city of Rovaniemi in May 2009. The premiere was on the 5th of May. The show will tour around Lapland for three weeks in September and October. An essential part of the entity of production are the dance and movement workshops for children and special groups held after the show. The dancers lead one hour workshops where children learn how they can express different things, feelings and emotions with their body and movements. At the same time the audience get to see near the set design and peer behind the scenes. The Ugly Duckling is produced in partnership with Lapin ammattiopisto (Lapland vocational college) and Lappset Group.
